Asante Riverwind

“Feel, within the iris mystery of eyes, the powdered silk wings of a butterfly interwoven with the celebration of life…… beyond even my intentions…as the image breathes full and flies with a life of its own….”

Asante Riverwind is a life-long creator of fine art, blending a range of art traditions and cultures. Many of his works fuse Celtic and original designs with wild nature, dreams, visions, and spirit. Born in the Year of the Water Dragon, this fiery artist was taught and encouraged by his artistic mother as soon as he could hold a pencil. Ten years of formal study at five universities were concluded at Cornish Art Institute in Seattle, Washington, in 1980. His art has exhibited extensively, been featured worldwide, and included in a number of published books.

Asante is a multi-decade activist on both social and ecological issues, co-founding a number of organizations and community groups since beginning as a teenager in 1968. In 2010, he founded a new arts and ecology resource, Gaia Ki. "Gaia" symbolizing the living Earth, "Ki" the flow of life energy, restoring balance and harmony. Asante is also a musician, writer, and poet. "Art and Evolution" is the name he uses for this amalgamation of activism and art.

Learning directly from nature, our wisest teacher, Asante has lived for over 16 years in tipi’s, a yurt, an earth lodge, and a strawbale home – from an island in Puget Sound, to the forests of the Cascades and Blue Mountains, and Arizona’s Sonoran desert—part of a commitment to ecological living.  He has three grown sons, and a number of grandchildren, who help inspire efforts to encourage us all to enjoy life in balance with this beautiful living Earth. To help provide affordable art, Asante offers quality prints, cards, books, & organic t-shirts in addition to original and commissioned works.

"Earth is not ours to own. We are here but in passing,a dance in a dream…Earth belongs to the wildlife &
future generations yet to be..."

An ardent explorer of nature's wild wonders and spirit's limitless dimensions, Asante's art blends inspiration from wildland adventures, dreams and visions, creating images infused with life's magic. In this "interesting times" era, his art illuminates places of harmony, compassion, healing change and the inherent connection of all beings beyond time.

In 1996, Asante experienced an event that most artists dread to imagine. A forest fire, ignited by a logging company working for Boise Cascade burned over 23,000 acres, including 14 dwellings; among them Asante’s home and studio, over 250 of his paintings, thousands of sketches and drawings, and numerous stone and wood sculptures. Soon after, he erected new tipis, one with a mural of a Phoenix bird rising from fiery ashes, and began creating again.
